After passing our RN Inspection a few weeks ago, the RN has decided to extend its RN recognition scheme from only 101 groups. This means that 1st Hampton Hill Sea Scout Group is now officially recognised by the Royal Navy and is the culmination of a lot of hard work and effort by the group council, leaders, parents, Raleigh Explorers, Sea Scouts, Cubs and Beavers over a period of years.

1st Hampton Hill first achieved RN Recognition back in 1976 and proudly held it until a few years ago when numbers in the group dropped below a required amount for RN recognition to stand.

Now, with thriving numbers in all sections at 1st HH, we are in a strong position for the future look forward to holding onto the recognition.

RN Recognition for a Sea Scout group is good news for a lot of reasons.

Firstly, it brings great prestige to the group. For a long time, there were only 100 RN Recognised Sea Scout Groups in the UK, with 1 permanently based in Gibraltar. The scheme has now been extended and as such 1st Hampton Hill Sea Scout Group can now wear the number RN103, which represents our place on the list of RN recognised groups
RN Recognition also allows us to officially use the name 'Achilles' for our group. This was allocated to us by the Royal Navy when we first gained RN Recognition in 1976. We were given the name after the ship HMS Achilles.
1st Hampton Hill is also now permitted to use the defaced Red Ensign, which displays the Admiralty Crown and also the Admiralty Pennant:


     


1st HH Sea Scouts and Raleigh Explorer Scouts are also allowed to wear the RN Recognition badge on their uniforms:

  

Benefits of Royal Navy Recognition for Sea Scouts:

1st Hampton Hill Sea Scout Group now has access to the 4 main events of the year for Sea Scouts in the UK. These are:

Summer Camp, HMS BRISTOL, Portsmouth.

Soccer Sixes, HMS BRISTOL, Portsmouth.

Swimming Gala, HMS RALEIGH, Plymouth.

Explorer Camp, HMS BRISTOL, Portsmouth.

There is also the opportunity to utilise HMS BRISTOL's facilities and RN Sailing Centre Assets.

Other benefits include:

Visit Portsmouth Heritage area attractions at heavily discounted rates.

Annual payment to the Scout Association (Admiralty Fund) based on a per capita payment for each Scout and Explorer Scout plus an allowance for certain badges as detailed in the Memorandum of Agreement.

Eligible to apply for grants from Scout Association for purchase of equipment and boats.

On joining an initial Stores outfit is issued.

We intend to start making use of these opportunities and await another RN inspection to retain our RN Recognition in approximately 18 months time!
